Langtang General Health Camp Sep. 25 - 26. 2006

Summary written by Dr. Basant Maharjan

"My feelings:

A seven day long trekking cum medical camp was really a small adventure; bad weather, whole day-night raining, exremely bad and dangerous road and steeps and tiredness of walking and walking, and on other hand, beautiful scene and sceneries, huge rocks and white water rivers, high water falls and tranquillizing snow tops and mountains, and fully relaxation with sips of Mustang Coffee in evening, and warm hospitality and care of 'Mandala', really an exciting journey, so memorable.

The medical camp, first time in the village so far, was also memorable. The educational decoration of kids' classrooms of the school where the camp hosted was so nourishing to the kids. Simple and innocence people, specially, the kids, women and elders, long awaited to reveal their physical pains, and active support of local volunteer hided tiredness of the team in no time. Conversation problem while examination and dispensing of medicines, later covered up by the locals, made some fun and difficulty to the team at beginning.

Soon after starting of the patient examination on the second day, i.e. turn of villagers, I personally felt lacking of a 'lady' physician in the team to who the women could freely talk about their so called secrete problems. Also, failing of including a drug dispenser in the team created a bit, but not mentionable, problem in medicine distribution.

Sorry to say, the health post, infrastructure and settings need to improve if possible. This sort of camp obviously not possible very often for various reasons, so it would be better if we could empower or update skill of local health workers and equip the local health facility as far as possible in addition to yearly or half yearly medical camps.

And, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to phect-NEPAL / Kathmandu Model Hospital Management, Mandala Welfare Society, Mr. Lhakpa Jungba Tamang, Mr. Mim Lal Shrestha, Local Volunteers, School Management Committee and teachers and Health Post staff of Langtang Village and the Medical Team members. And my sincere thanks to Nepalkinderhilfe, Germany and Nepalmed Germany as well.

Dr. Basant Maharjan"
