Kathmandu Model Hospital

Changing concepts of health services

The hospital was opened in June 1993 as a referral clinic for patients from the surrounding communities with 18 beds. In 1995 it moved into a second building, which increased the bed-capacity to 50. In spring 2003 the new hospital complex could finally be opened, allowing now the care of 125 patients in the new building on Exhibition Road. In 2004 the OPD was moved from Bagbazar to Exhibition road and in 2005 the bureau and the remaining stuff left the old premises. It is now one of the reputed hospitals for secondary and tertiary specialized services in the capital city. Despite limited resources, it promotes the best possible newer methods of treatment.

Kathmandu Model Hospital envisions health services as an integral part of processes to explore human potentail and believes in the principles that health service:

  • should not aim at merely curing diseases, but also at removing human suffering

  • should be a mix of technology and human values

  • should not be denied to those who cannot buy services and those who do not seek the services

Dental Service:

VSOG Dental Clinic was established in Kathmandu Model Hospital in 1996 as a state-of-the-art dental clinic in cooperation with VSOG (Volunteer Service Oral Group) Japan. It is equipped with a sophisticated dental chair unit, modern equipment, special surgery room, oral hygiene section and prosthodontic laboratory. The clinic works in all areas of dental specialties including Orthodontics, Prosthodontics, Oral surgical procedures, Periodontics, Endodontics etc. It has dental radiological service facilities including IOPA, Orthopantomogram (OPG, Panoramax X-ray), Lateral Cephalogram and others.

Besides the clinical services, VSOG Dental Clinic also organizes various community oral health activities such as a school oral health program, free dental camps, training programs, research works and participation in scientific presentations and interaction programs on oral health issues on various occasions.

phect-NEPAL has stepped into the formal training program recognized by the government and affiliated to the Council for Technical Education & Vocational Training (CTEVT) with the new training course “Dental Hygienist” in the academic year 2000/01. The technical institute has been established as the “Kathmandu Model Hospital-School of Oral Health”. The organization also plans to conduct oral health and other health-related formal training programs as well as establish the dental training school in Kirtipur. A 2-year course for Dental Lab Technicians is planned to begin in the near future.

The Community Dental Center has been established in Kritipur with modern dental equipment in a newly constructed building. The center intends to provide basic dental treatment service to the people of the Kirtipur municipality and surrounding villages. The center imparts oral health education to the community with emphasis on preventive health care and will become a training center for the dental education program of phect-Nepal and an activity area research community. The center refers specialized and complicated cases to the central VSOG Dental Clinic in Kathmandu. AT KCDC building, the modern phantom head laboratory set-up is installed for students academic on preclinical procedures.

School of Oral Health

Oral health problems are overshadowed by the burden of many other health problems. Therefore oral health has not received a due priorit in public health. As one of the consequences, training of health workers in this area  is grossly inadequate. As there are few oral health workers, problems related to oral health get less attention and people become less aware of the problem, thus creating a viscious cycle. With this view phect-NEPAL has stepped into the formal academic training program recognized by the government and affiliated to the Council for technical Education & Vocational Training (CTEVT) with the new training course of "Dental Hygienist" in the academic year 2000/01. The technical institute has been established as "Kathmandu Model Hospital - School of Oral Health". The organization also plans to conduct oral health and other health related formal training programs and establish the dental training school in Kirtipur. In the near future a 2-year course for Dental Lab. Technicians is planned to start. (read more on the course of a Dental Hygienist)

As the School of Oral Health is based on Kathmandu Model Hospital premises, it fulfills all the physical, technical and academic requirements to conduct the course of Dental Hygienist. The VSOG Dental Clinic is the principal premise for the course.

The VSOG Dental Clinic is well equipped with number of dental chair units, necessary equipments, instruments and dental materials. A separate oral hygiene section has been set up for the clinical demonstration to the students and practical demonstration lab is arranged with study models, charts, posters etc. for practical group discussion to the students. The infrastructure of KMH will be used for hospital related demonstrations like hospital wards, pathology, radiology, pharmacology and sterilization of instruments. The HISC's of CHDP activity areas and Community Dental Center in Kirtipur will be used for community health education, fieldwork and OJT:

The spacious, well illuminated lecture room is equipped with overhead rpjector, slide projector, audio-visual aids and comfortable setting arrangement for more than forty students. The bookshelves in the library room contain various books on dental, medical and general interest with training manual / handbooks, journals, magazines and newspapers on dental subjects with sufficient seating arrangement. The lectures will be taken by number of qualified dental surgeons dedicated to institution and quality dental education. Most of them are involved in the development of curriculum, test-book writing and research & planning of the related field. The medical academics are supporte by qualified medical personnel's like bonafied nurses and medical doctor.

Acupuncture services

Although acupuncture is not indigenous to Nepal, this therapeutic method of Traditional Chinese Medicine was introduced to Nepal more than 5 decades ago. phect-NEPAL believes in the healing potential of different systems and their harmonizing integration to alleviate human sufferings; an Acupuncture Unit was established within the Kathmandu Model Hospital during its early days. The Unit provides acupuncture and acupressure services through the OPD and in-house patients at the Model Hospital admitted for different problems. The Acupuncture Unit works in close cooperation with various departments of the hospital and maintains a two-way referral system.
